1. Utilize and adopt proven evidence-based interventions to assess risk, prevent, and/or treatment protocols for delirium in the geriatric hip fracture patient.
Geriatric hip fractures continue to rise in the U.S. with estimates up to 400,000 per year over the next decade. The financial burden is estimated to reach US$62 billion by 2040. Postoperative delirium in the geriatric hip fracture patient population represents significant morbidity, mortality, and financial burden to patients and the healthcare system. The purpose of this webinar is to describe the risk factors for delirium, propose a standardized approach to the identification of delirium during hospitalization, suggest evidence-based treatment and a multi-disciplinary team approach for this debilitating complication. Prevention, screening, and early treatment of delirium in the geriatric hip fracture patient population is a top priority of the orthopedic team. Utilizing the CAM assessment routinely and relying on a multidisciplinary team are aspects of this proposal that have been shown in the literature to improved outcomes in delirious geriatric patients. Aggressive education, standardized early recovery protocols, and prevention of complications are paramount to tackling the dire sequela that patients suffer from following a fragility hip fracture. The methods described in this webinar are supported by best evidence practice to do just that.
