In 2009, NAON, in partnership with the James A Haley Veterans Hospital Patient Safety Center, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the American Nurses Association, developed algorithms describing safe patient handling approaches.
These updated algorithms, completed in 2016, take into account current literature and trends in mobilization equipment. The algorithms guide critical thinking and strategies for mobilizing orthopaedic patients in common scenarios – repositioning in bed, lateral transfer from the bed to a chair with extremity precautions, transfer with an extremity cast/splint and ambulation.
Algorithm 1: Repositioning In Bed
Algorithm 2: Vertical Transfer of an Orthopaedic Patient with or without Upper or Lower Extremity Precautions
Algorithm 3: Vertical Transfer of an Orthopaedic Patient with an Extremity Cast/Splint
Algorithm 4: Ambulation
Each algorithms comes with its own specific notes and a reference list.
